Bear Wallow Hike

Lead by a professional guide and trail leader, 12 Deerfield residents hiked to the top of Bear Wallow Mountain on a sometimes steep 1 mile switchback trail. The top of the mountain is a bald offering great views south to high country of South Carolina and north into Hickory Nut Gorge. We were delighted to find a cow happily grazing on the bald not far from us.

From there we continued through the woods to the bald of Little Bear Wallow with views of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock and more cows. Our return was back to the first bald and down a gravel for a 4.5 mile hike.
